The Plateau State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Jatau Gyang Davou, on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, commenced a two-day stakeholder engagement with key institutions in the state as part of efforts to promote understanding, strengthen collaboration and address concerns arising from recent incidents involving Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) in Jos metropolis.
The Commissioner was accompanied by the Director of Vehicle Inspection, Engr. Zam Jonathan; Director of Transport, Engr. Bitrus D. David; Director of Administration, Celestine Godwin; and other officials and transport workers from the Ministry. The engagement took the team to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Plateau State Chapter.
At the first stop at the NUJ Secretariat, Hon. Jatau Davou engaged journalists on the responsibilities and operations of VIOs, particularly the importance of checking essential vehicle and roadworthiness requirements as part of efforts to promote road safety. He used the opportunity to clarify areas of concern surrounding the recent incidents and stressed the need for better understanding and communication among stakeholders.
The NUJ Chairperson, Mrs Ayiku Pwaspo, commended the Commissioner for initiating the engagement, describing the move as a welcome step towards addressing concerns through dialogue and constructive interaction.
The Commissioner and his team thereafter proceeded to the Federal Road Safety Corps, where they were received by the State Sector Commander, Adelaja S. Ogungbemi. The Sector Commander noted that the responsibilities of the FRSC and VIO are closely connected, particularly in the area of road safety and vehicle compliance. He stressed the importance of continuous training and capacity building for personnel, noting that improved professionalism and coordination among officers would help prevent avoidable incidents on the roads.
The final engagement for the day was with the Nigerian Bar Association, Plateau State Chapter, where the delegation was received by the State Chairman, Morgan Dung, Esq. The NBA Chairman welcomed the Commissioner and commended him for taking the initiative to engage critical stakeholders in the interest of finding constructive solutions to emerging issues within the transportation sector.
He expressed the association’s readiness to support the Ministry where necessary, particularly in strengthening collaboration and ensuring that issues bordering on transportation and road safety are addressed within the framework of law, professionalism and mutual understanding.
The first day of the engagement reflects Hon. Jatau Gyang Davou’s commitment to responsive leadership and his willingness to listen to stakeholders, clarify areas of concern and seek practical solutions through dialogue. Rather than allowing recent incidents to create further misunderstanding, the Commissioner has chosen the path of consultation and collaboration, bringing relevant institutions together to promote safer roads, better coordination and improved service delivery across Plateau State.
