Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, joins well wishers in celebrating His Excellency Sir Ambassador Fidelis Naanmiap Tapgun, CON, KSGG, KSM, who turns 85 today. The former Plateau State Governor, one-time Nigerian Ambassador to Kenya, former Minister of Industry and Director-General of the Obasanjo/Atiku Presidential Campaign, has built a public service record marked by depth, consistency and quiet strength. Known for remaining humble and approachable despite the height of offices he has held, Sir Ambassador Tapgun continues to stand as a steady figure whose experience still carries weight in national conversations.
During his brief tenure as Governor of Plateau State, Sir Ambassador Tapgun made deliberate and far-reaching choices in education. His administration paid WAEC and JAMB fees for students and supplied learning materials, easing the load on parents and lifting enrolment. Chief Burki himself was among those who benefited from these measures, which opened doors for many young people at a time when the cost of examinations placed heavy strain on families.
The same government also removed consultation and maternity fees for women in public hospitals. These decisions remain living legacies that reflect a clear preference for the ordinary citizen. Across every office he occupied, Sir Ambassador Tapgun maintained a good name free of scandal, a record that stands as further evidence of his integrity and his steady contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey as a true patriot.
At 85, Chief Ayuba Burki Gufwan salutes this elder statesman and prays that God grants him continued good health so that he will continue to contribute and offer valuable insight into governance and public service.
