The Plateau State Chapter of the CityBoy Movement has unveiled the first batch of recipients of its CityBoy ICON Recognition Awards, honouring individuals it says have distinguished themselves through grassroots mobilisation, public service, community development and various forms of social impact.
The awards were unveiled as part of activities marking the inauguration of the Plateau State Chapter, with the Movement’s Media and Communications Directorate highlighting the significance of the recognition programme and the contributions of the award recipients.
Explaining the idea behind the initiative, the Director of Media and Communications, Mr Golepji David Wambutda, said the awards were introduced to ensure that people who have contributed meaningfully to society are not only appreciated but also have their efforts properly documented.
Wambutda explained that the CityBoy ICON Recognition Awards were designed to go beyond the usual presentation of plaques and certificates, stressing that the initiative seeks to draw attention to individuals whose work and service have had visible impact in their communities and in the wider society.
He said the initiative also reflects the movement’s interest in grassroots engagement, youth participation and public service, areas which he noted are closely connected to the broader development objectives associated with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“The CityBoy ICON Recognition Awards are about identifying and celebrating people whose contributions have created impact in different spheres of society. We believe that service should be documented, recognised and celebrated, particularly when such service connects with the larger aspirations of national development,” Wambutda said.
Among those recognised in the first phase is Hon. Umar Mantu, popularly known as “The Obedient General Worldwide,” who received the CityBoy ICON Grassroots Mobiliser Award for his grassroots mobilisation and engagement.
The CityBoy ICON Public Sector Recognition Award was presented to Hon. Ephraim Usman, Hon. Prince Miaphen and Arc. Hart Bankat in recognition of their respective roles and contributions in the public sector.
The CityBoy ICON Grassroots Impact Recognition Award also featured several political and community figures, including Hon. John Dafaan, Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, Hon. Beni Lar, Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Sanda, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf Incham, Hon. Owen Dagogot and Hon. Joseph Gokum.
In the area of community development and social impact, Dr. Bunshak Illiya Tumka was honoured with the CityBoy ICON Community Development and Social Impact Award for his contributions to community development and social impact.
The first phase also reserved its CityBoy ICON Lifetime Service & Legacy Award for three prominent Plateau figures: Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, former Governor Simon Bako Lalong and Professor Nentawe Yilwatda.
The recognition places the three personalities among individuals the movement considers to have made notable contributions through their years of public service and leadership in Plateau State and Nigeria.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang is the serving Governor of Plateau State, while Senator Simon Bako Lalong, a former Governor of the state, previously served as the federal Minister of Labour and Employment. Professor Nentawe Yilwatda currently serves as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress.
According to the CityBoy Movement, the different award categories were deliberately created to accommodate the various ways individuals contribute to society. These include grassroots mobilisation, political participation, public administration, community development, social intervention and long-term leadership.
The Movement said the recognition programme is also part of its broader effort to encourage youth participation and strengthen grassroots engagement within the political and civic space.
For the Plateau Chapter, the first phase of the CityBoy ICON Recognition Awards marks the beginning of what it hopes will become a continuing platform for identifying and appreciating individuals whose contributions are making a difference in their communities and beyond.
The Media and Communications Directorate said subsequent phases of the programme would provide opportunities to recognise more individuals across Plateau State and other parts of the country for their contributions to public service, grassroots development, leadership, community building and social transformation.
With its first batch of honourees cutting across political leaders, public servants, grassroots mobilisers and community-impact figures, the CityBoy Movement said the ICON Recognition Awards would continue to serve as a platform for celebrating service and keeping a record of contributions to community and national development.
