CITN Jos District Society, PSIRS Mark National Tax Awareness Day 2026 with Public Sensitization Walk

The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Jos and District Society, in collaboration with the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), on Thursday, June 25, 2026, commemorated the National Tax Awareness Day 2026 with a series of activities aimed at promoting tax education, compliance, and national development.

The event was themed “Tax Awareness for National Growth, Reform, Compliance and Prosperity” and attracted tax professionals, revenue administrators, and stakeholders from across the taxation sector.

Speaking during the event, the Chairman of CITN Jos and District Society, Mr. Reuben Dadar, FCTI (NRS), explained that the essence of the awareness campaign was to educate citizens and business owners on the importance of taxation and its role in driving national growth and development. He particularly emphasized the significance of obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN), noting that it is a key requirement for tax administration and compliance.

The event commenced on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, with a radio sensitization programme on tax awareness. The session was facilitated by Mr. Yunana Arin, FCTI (NRS) and Mr. Paul Arin, FCTI, who enlightened listeners on the benefits of tax compliance and the responsibilities of taxpayers. The main event took place on Thursday, June 25, beginning with a road walk at 8:00 a.m. The awareness walk started from the Secretariat Bridge and proceeded to Old Airport Roundabout. Participants later moved from Old Airport to Terminus Metro Bus Station before concluding at Old Bukuru Park. As part of the sensitization exercise, tax clinics were established at strategic locations, including Old Airport Roundabout, Terminus Metro Bus Station, and Old Bukuru Park. These clinics provided members of the public and business owners with firsthand information on taxation, tax registration, compliance procedures, and other related matters.

Also speaking during the exercise, Mrs. Emily Daboer, FCTI, Coordinating Director, Revenue Operations Group, PSIRS, reiterated the importance of tax payment in supporting government development initiatives and ensuring the provision of essential public services.

Similarly, Mrs. Afiniki Walbe, Director, Board of Internal Revenue, encouraged business owners and residents to fulfill their tax obligations, stressing that taxes provide government with the resources needed to execute projects that directly benefit citizens and improve their quality of life. Adding her voice, Mrs. Rhoda Aki of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) reassured business owners that tax compliance should not be viewed with fear or suspicion. She clarified misconceptions surrounding taxation and explained that banks do not arbitrarily deduct money from customers’ accounts without due process, urging the public to embrace voluntary compliance.

The awareness campaign attracted widespread attention from traders, transport operators, and other members of the public who engaged the tax professionals on various issues relating to taxation.
One of the highlights of the event was the colorful appearance of participants, who were dressed in ash-coloured T-shirts paired with black jeans. Their coordinated attire, coupled with lively music and energetic dance performances, added excitement and visibility to the campaign, drawing the attention of passersby and creating a friendly atmosphere for public engagement.

The 2026 National Tax Awareness Day celebration successfully reinforced the message that tax compliance remains a vital tool for national growth, economic reform, prosperity, and sustainable development.
