The Nigerian Army has emphasized the need for sustained collaboration with the media as it continues operations aimed at addressing the country’s diverse security challenges.
Speaking during the Fourth Quarter Media Chat of the Army Headquarters Department of Civil–Military Affairs in Jos, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said improved cooperation with journalists would help counter the growing weaponization of media narratives that threaten national security.
The Army Chief, represented by the General Officer Commanding 3 Armoured Division and Commander Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, urged media professionals to uphold objectivity, credibility and fairness in their reporting, especially on issues concerning the Nigerian Army.
He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to maintaining open and regular communication channels to support timely and accurate reporting that strengthens national security.
Earlier, the Chief of Civil–Military Affairs, Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, explained that this quarter’s theme, “The Nigerian Security Environment: The Role of Strategic Communication in Strengthening Civil–Military Relations,” was deliberately chosen to deepen cooperation between the military and the media in the collective pursuit of a safer country.
He encouraged journalists to reflect on the importance of collaboration and to maintain professionalism in their coverage of security matters.
The event also featured presentations on topics such as the impact of emerging technology on the media, strategies for effective military-media collaboration, and the role of strategic communication in countering violent extremism and insurgency. Panel discussions followed, allowing experts to exchange insights on improving civil–military relations through responsive and responsible communication.
