Hon. Dr. Sylvanus Mathew Kwarpo Disburses Over ₦30 Million Scholarship to 1,500 Students in Mangu South

For many families across Mangu South Constituency, access to quality education remains one of the greatest aspirations and, at times, one of the most difficult challenges. In recognition of this reality, the Member representing Mangu South Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Dr. Sylvanus Mathew Kwarpo, has taken a significant step toward expanding educational opportunities by disbursing over ₦30 million in scholarships to 1,500 students across the constituency.

The beneficiaries, drawn from primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, include students affected by the recent attacks in Mangu as well as persons living with disabilities. The scholarship awards were presented during the Ampang West Kook Cheer Dancing Competition held in honour of the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, and later at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Hall in Mangu.

Beyond the financial support, the initiative reflects a deliberate investment in human capital development and a commitment to ensuring that economic hardship does not prevent young people from pursuing their educational ambitions. Representing the Acting Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Scholarship Board and the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mr. Gyang Victor Jang, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, commended Hon. Kwarpo for what he described as a timely and impactful intervention.

According to him, the scholarship scheme aligns with the education-focused agenda of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, whose administration has expanded scholarship opportunities for students in state-owned tertiary institutions and introduced foreign scholarship programmes for indigent students across Plateau State.
He noted that investments in education often require significant resources and patience, but their impact remains one of the most enduring forms of development, as educated citizens become agents of progress within their communities and beyond.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Dr. Kwarpo expressed appreciation to representatives of government, traditional rulers, community leaders, stakeholders, and constituents who attended the event. He acknowledged the leadership of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the support of various community actors whose efforts continue to contribute to the well-being of the people of Mangu South.

According to the lawmaker, the scholarship programme was conceived not merely as a financial intervention but as a strategic investment in the future of the constituency. He disclosed that while some beneficiaries would receive full payment of their school fees, others would benefit from substantial support covering up to 80 percent of their educational expenses. He further explained that students in tertiary institutions would receive a minimum of ₦50,000 each, while special consideration was given to victims of the recent crisis and persons living with disabilities. Hon. Kwarpo emphasized that sustainable development can only be achieved when young people are equipped with the knowledge and opportunities needed to reach their full potential. He therefore encouraged individuals, organisations, and community leaders to continue supporting educational initiatives, describing every investment in a child’s education as an investment in the future of society.

In a touching moment during the event, Mr. Nehemiah Mutfwang, while symbolically presenting scholarship awards to tertiary institution students living with disabilities, encouraged the beneficiaries to remain committed to their studies and strive for excellence. He expressed optimism that the support would serve as a foundation for greater achievements in their academic journeys.

Demonstrating further generosity, Mr. Nehemiah personally donated an additional ₦50,000 to each beneficiary living with disabilities, a gesture that was warmly received by students, parents, and attendees.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, several students expressed heartfelt appreciation for the scholarship programme, describing it as a source of relief and renewed hope at a time when many families are grappling with economic challenges. They pledged to make productive use of the opportunity and remain focused on their educational pursuits.

For many of the recipients, the scholarship represents more than financial assistance. It is a reassurance that their dreams matter, that their community believes in their potential, and that they have not been forgotten.
